David Hill

David Milton Hill, age 98, of Brevard died Monday June 11, 2012. He was born November 7, 1913 in Charlotte NC to Grover Cleveland and Myrtie Howe Hill. He was preceded in death by three brothers; Isaac Gibson Hill, Grover Cleveland Hill and Billy Gallant Hill. He married twice; Margaret Juanita Thomas was the mother of his children; Patricia, Michael and Stephen. After their divorce, he married Vera O’Neill of Huntsville, Ontario Canada. After graduation from Central High School, David worked for a time in the business office of the Charlotte Observer with Harry Allen and Otho Strane. From there he went to the post office while Paul Younts was postmaster and was later sent to the Navy as mailman to the USS Abatan. He saw service from the Marshalls, the Carolines, the Philippines, Guam, and to Shanghai before war’s end. He lived with his second wife in Jacksonville, Florida for ten years, working at West Bay Annex Post Office and retired from there. They moved back to her home and lived in Muskoka section of Ontario for several years and later, they made their home in Brevard; but on an extended trip, his wife died in Canada. David was a well-known artist. When Charlotte was lit by carbon arc lights, in the 20’s he would hunt for spent carbon rods, and mark up sidewalks with drawings. Later he studied with Paul Bartlett at the Mint Museum, and up to the end, his easel was always a fixture in his home. Survivors include his long-time companion, Eleanor Thoben, three children, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday June 16, 2012 at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel.
