Dorothy Malin

<p>Dorothy Anne Malin, 91, a resident of Brevard for the past 30 years, peacefully passed Friday, February 26, 2010 in her home at College Walk. Dorothy was born on May 24, 1918 in Montclair, NJ She was the daughter of the late Nina Thomas and Harry David McKinney and sister of the late David McKinney. She attended Colby Junior College in New Hampshire from 1936-1938. It was at Colby where she met her roommate Cleo Horton who would become her best friend for 74 years. Dorothy and Cleo loved to ride horses (English style) as did Dorothy's father who rode well into his 80's. Cleo was a nurse in the war after leaving Colby and presently resides in San Jose, CA. Dorothy left Colby to attend St. Lawrence University in New York where she earned a secretarial degree. While working at Westinghouse in New York in the early 1940's, Dorothy met the love of her life, Robert Malin. She and Robert were married in New Jersey in 1946 and enjoyed 54 wonderful years until he passed in 2000. She and Robert shared a love of Poodles and Dorothy earned many ribbons in Dog show competitions across the country. Dorothy had an interest in the mental health field and enjoyed volunteering at Trend in Brevard. Her heartfelt donations to charities involving children were never boasted upon. She was a wonderful storyteller with an incredible memory filled with details and favorite sayings. One of her sayings which most of her close friends will remember her by is, "use it or lose it"! This saying kept her committed to her weekly workouts. Survivors include: nephews James A. McKinney of Charleston, SC, David P. McKinney of Washington and Donald L.McKinney of California; nieces Suzanne Malin Shay and Elizabeth Malin Pelesky; brother-in-law Denis Malin and his wife Susan Malin. Along with her beloved poodles, George and Jamie, she will be missed by many friends including her wonderful caregiver Lynn Secosin. A funeral mass will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday March 3th, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Carl Del Guidice will officiate. Burial will be in Pisgah Gardens Cemetery following a reception of friends and family at Sacred Heart. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sharing House, PO BOX 958, Brevard, NC 28712. Arrangements are by Moody-Connolly Funeral Home.</p>
