Earl E. Powell, 91, of Mills River passed away at his home on June 13, 2013. He was born April 14, 1922 in Rosman NC to the late Arie Agnes and R.K. Powell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jane Ledbetter Powell and his great-grandsons, Blake and Eli Powell. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, JD Powell, Fred Powell and Alfred Powell; sisters, Hattie Flood, Nadine Thomas and Josephine Stephens. Earl is survived by his two daughters, Ann P. Garren of Pisgah Forest and Lynne P. Tinsley and husband, Larry of Brevard. Also surviving are his 5 grandchildren, Shanaia G. Powell and husband Dwayne of Pisgah Forest, Isaac Tinsley of Athens, GA, Hannah Tinsley of Sevierville, TN, Caleb Tinsley and Rebekah Tinsley of Brevard. Two great-grandchildren, Lawson and Carter Powell also survive him. A sister, Christine Newton of Pisgah Forest and several nieces and nephews survive him as well.
Earl was a retired millwright from Ecusta Corporation. He served as President of American Clogging Hall of Fame for over 20 years. He enjoyed traveling to different clogging competitions and serving as a judge. Earl also called square dances in Brevard for many years. Many were held at Silvermont and at Robin Hood’s Barn. He was a Past President and Life Time Member of Brevard Jaycees. He also spent much time repairing washing machines and dryers. Along with his wife, Jane, he was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Brevard NC.
The family will receive friends on June 14, 2013 from 6-8pm at First United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be June 15, 2013 at 2pm, also at FUMC. Burial will be at Gillespie Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southeastern Firefighters Burn Fund, 3614 J. Dewey Gray Circle Building C. Augusta GA 30909.
