Brevard – Gaynell Shook Mathis, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 25, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Spencer and Elsie Banther Shook. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Benjamin Mathis; daughters, Holly Reems, Hilda Simpson, Rhonda Smith and Sandra McCall. Gaynell was a life-long member of Open Arms Tabernacle. She was a godly lady that was completely devoted to the Lord and her family. She was a hard worker and enjoyed gardening. Surviving are her sons; Randy Mathis and wife Juanita of Mills River, Jack Mathis of Brevard and Tony Mathis of Brevard, daughters; Linda Heatherly of Brevard and Rita Johnson of Marrietta, SC, sisters; Sue Hooper and Bobbie Begley of Rosman, 22 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. . Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Open Arms Tabernacle with the Revs. Don Johnson and Jack Drake officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Rock Bridge Cemetery.
