Mary Helen Stephenson Wilson, 89 of Brevard died October 5, 2011 after a period of declining health. Helen (as she was known to her friends) was born in Havana, Cuba of American parents and lived there until she moved to Miami, FL to attend high school. She married Harlan Wilson in 1942. While living in Miami she raised three children, worked as a medical secretary, put herself through nursing school and worked as a hospice nurse for Hospice Inc one of the nation's first Hospice Programs. She retired to Brevard in 1985. She will be remembered for her love of hospice care, classical music, especially Beethoven, dachshunds and of course, her family. She was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Transylvania County, One of the first volunteers at The Free Clinic in Brevard and Volunteered at The Sharing House and also was a volunteer translator for Transylvania Court System and taught English and many Spanish speaking residents. She is survived by her children Pat Hurtak and her husband Emil of Etowah, Donald Wilson and his wife Linda of Pontiac, MO and Beryl Bradley and her husband Tom of Brevard, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her good friends Isabelle Fazio, John Martinez and Claire Frank. The family wishes to acknowledge the entire staff at The Oaks of Brevard and Four Seasons Hospice for the care Helen received in the last months of her life. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
