Janice Gunther Obituary

Janice Mary Gunther Brevard – Our beloved mother, Janice Mary Gunther, 86, of Brevard died peacefully on Thursday January 17 surrounded by her dear sister Joyce Schanck, "her" loving son Thomas with wonderful wife Rachel and angel of mercy niece, Sally Kimball. Janice was born in New York, lived in Belmar, NJ where she raised her 9 children, before moving to Brevard in 1992. Anyone who knew our mom knew her faith was unshakeable as demonstrated in her daily spiritual rituals. Family was always the most important thing in her life whilst cooking was not! Janice Mary was a"true blue" Yankee and Fighting Irish fan and also had a fondness for the ponies. Her thirst for knowledge and travel was unquenchable. This took Jan worldwide in the company of her family and many friends. She graduated St Joseph's College with a History Degree. After her youngest child started school, Janice went back and obtained her degree in Education. She taught for 20 years before retiring from Allenwood Elementary School. Besides her children, 23 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild, Jan considered teaching to be her greatest accomplishment. She truly lived life to the fullest until succumbing to leukemia. Jan is predeceased by her parents, Fergus and Selma Morrissey, daughter Geralynn and much loved and missed brother-in-law Jimmy Schanck. She is not only survived by her children: Chrissy, Kathy, Bobby, Lisa, Ginny, Kenneth, "her" Thomas, John and Geraldine and their respective spouses and children but also by her beloved twin, best friend and sissy to the end Joyce Schanck and her family. Jan was an active member of Sacred Heart Church where services will be held on January 31 at 11am. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care by Transylvania Regional Hospital, Brevard Humane Society, Sacred Heart Church or a charity of your choice.
