Joan Marie Shisler, 85, died on January 26, 2016, at Cedar Mountain House in Brevard, North Carolina. Joan Marie Arace was born on February 8, 1930, in New York City. She was raised by her paternal grandparents. Their family relocated to Miami, Florida where she met her husband William (Bill) D. Shisler, Sr. Joan was married to Bill on February 5, 1949, in Miami, FL. Her husband, died on April 22, 2013, in Fort Pierce, Florida. They were married for 64 years. Joan is survived by their three children: son, Dr. Michael C. Shisler and his wife, Joan, of St. Leonard, MD; daughter, Julie Van Fleet and her husband Kenneth (Barney) now of Port St. Lucie, FL, and formerly of San Diego, CA; son, William (Bill) D. Shisler, Jr. and his wife, Roma Diane (Whealton), of Pisgah, NC. Joan had six grandchildren: the Rev. Sara Shisler Goff, and her spouse, Heather, of Baltimore, MD; Margo Shisler of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Colin Shisler of St. Leonard, MD; Evan Shisler of St. Leonard, MD; Jered Whealton and his wife, Amanda, of Shallotte, NC; Chelsea Glasscock and her husband, Justin, of Johnson City, Tennessee. Joan’s first great grandchild is Killian Whealton. The immediate family will host a memorial service at 4 pm on Saturday, 2/6/2016, at the Moody – Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard. Interment will be at Flagler Memorial Park in Miami later in February. The family wishes to thank the Hospice Care of Brevard and the Cedar Mountain House staff for their support and care for Joan.
