John Olewine

John Lincoln Olewine passed away on March 9, 2015 at his Tore’s Home residence from natural causes. He was 88 years old. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise Elder Smith Olewine of Brevard, NC; three children, John Harris Olewine (Marcia) of Daleville, VA, Robert Elder Olewine (Libby) of Greer, SC, and Jane Gilbert Olewine Manderfield (Robert) of Colorado Springs, CO; seven grandsons; and three great granddaughters. Jack was born on June 14, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to James Harris and Ethel Gilbert Olewine. He is preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, James Harris, Jr. and George Gilbert Olewine. Jack was raised in State College, PA and graduated from State College High School in 1944. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1948. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity. On August 10, 1948, he married Louise Elder Smith, whom he met while both attended Penn State. Jack spent his entire working career in the paper industry, serving in numerous capacities at Westvaco, Nekoosa-Edwards, and Garfield Paper, prior to relocating to Brevard in 1970 to work at Olin. He and his family made Brevard their home and he retired from Glatfelter in 1988. He was a member of the Elks and Kiwanis Clubs. A memorial service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, March 24th at the Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for 45 years. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. Jack served the church in many capacities over the years as a deacon, usher, and choir member. Final interment will be in the church’s Garden of Remembrance. His family wishes to thank the Tore’s Home staff who provided compassionate care during his final days, allowing him to die peacefully at home, as was his wish. Jack was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend who will be missed forever by those who were privileged to know and love him. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials may be made to the music fund at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church.
