Lt. Colonel (Ret) Clarence Carter Hardin Brevard –U.S.A.F. Lt. Col. (Ret) Clarence Carter Hardin, 88, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Tore’s Home #2, Brevard, NC. He was married in June, 1947 to Helen Poderis at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland and was married for 67 years. With 28 years of military service, including three foreign three year tours, he retired in 1971 and entered the Transylvania County School System to teach in the Science Department at Brevard High School. He retired from the school system in June, 1986. Lt. Col. Hardin graduated from the University of Chicago in June, 1947 with a B.S. in Meteorology. He subsequently received a Masters degree in Education from Whitworth University, Spokane, WA in June, 1959. During World War II, he served for two years in the China-Burma-India Theater before entry into the regular U.S. Army Air Corp which became the U.S. Air Force in December, 1947. He had a twenty-eight year U.S. Air Force career, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. The highlight of his career was provision of meteorological support to the Lockheed U-2 development in 1955 and 1956 in California and Nevada. His last assignment in the Air Force was three years in the Panama Canal Zone with temporary periods of duty in Bolivia, South America. He retired from the U.S.A.F. in 1970 and moved to Brevard, NC. Lt. Col. Hardin started teaching at Brevard High School as a science teacher in 1971. Later on he served as a guidance counselor for several years before again returning to the classroom. He terminated his employment with the school system in 1986 and retired for the last time. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd of Brevard, and was an active member of Dunn’s Rock Masonic Lodge #267 and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Asheville, Orient of North Carolina. Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Helen P. Hardin. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM Monday, June 24, 2013 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with full military graveside rites conducted by the Shaw Air Force Base Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
