Mary Mitchell

Mary Elinor Stone Mitchell of Tampa, Florida, and formerly of Brevard, wife of Thomas L. Mitchell, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Ellena Winstead Stone and Richard Gantt Stone. She is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren: Ellena Crandall and her son Richard Lee Mitchell Crandall live in York, South Carolina. Her youngest daughter, Stone Meredith, and her son, Gantt Meredith, reside in Tampa, Florida, where they lived with Mary Elinor for the last ten years. She is also survived by two nephews, Donald and Robert Snowdon of Brevard. Mary Elinor was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered in the Transylvania County area for many years and was instrumental in the early years of Glen Cannon Country Club, where she was an active member of the Ladies Golf League. She was also a devoted member to the Ace of Clubs Contract Bridge group in Brevard. A memorial service will be held Sept. 9, 2011, at 10. a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. A graveside gathering will follow at Gillespie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be made to Saint Philip's Episcopal Church, 256 East Main Street, Brevard, NC 28712.
