Perry Powell Brevard, North Carolina Obituary

Perry Powell

Perry Fields Powell, Jr. Brevard – On the evening of July 8, 2014 Perry Fields Powell, Jr. passed away after a two year battle with cancer while being attended by caring staff members at the Oaks of Brevard and under the amazing care of Dr. Shante Lucas and her staff at the Brevard Cancer Center in Brevard. Perry was 78 years old. Perry was born in Transylvania County on September 26, 1935. He was the 5th child of 10 children and the first son of the late Carrie Bagwell Powell and Perry Fields Powell, Sr. Perry always had a passion for cars and trucks since he was a young man. He was known for always having a “spotless vehicle!”. He spent many days and weekends at local car shows and admiring vintage cars like he once owned. Perry loved God, his family, his job at Ecusta, his Border Collie “Lucky”, friends and life. Perry relished his retirement days. He loved his mornings at McDonalds, having coffee with the “boys!”. He spent hours reminiscing about the old days. Perry also spent hours “warming the stool” at Joe Lance Automotive, another home away from home. He enjoyed the talks with Joe, Lois Ann, Chad and the many customers that stopped in the store, some pulled up a stool and “stayed awhile to chat!”. Another love of his was traveling to the Pickens Flea Market. His niece, Bette and David Cantrell Russell are the owners, and he almost never missed a weekend to travel down to visit them and other family members, Joyce, Patsy, Myrtle, Gladys and Junior. Perry spent hours sitting at the grill chatting with everyone and “sometimes” having one of the “best cheeseburgers ever!” Even in Perry’s final days he talked about missing his trips to the flea market and wondered what “Ms. Bette was doing?” He had a trying upbringing on East Fork. He worked the acres of fields alongside his parents and dug graves by hand to make a living. He later met Nellie Lyday in front of Brevard Jewelers. They married and had two daughters, Dianne Rene Neal of Cornelius, NC and Sheila Lynn Powell, now deceased. Perry loved his wife and girls and made a loving home for them. The four of them attended Morningside Baptist Church and were all active in many areas of the church. In addition to his parents, wife and daughter, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Steve, Guy and Lester Powell, and his sisters, Martha Cantrell, Bertha Patterson and Nellie Miller. Surviving in addition to his daughter are his sisters, Sylvia Lyda, Dorothy Brooks and Ruth Colditz; grandson, James Neal and wife Marian of Huntersville; great grandson, Alex Neal; The funeral service will be held at 1 PM Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hank Moffitt officiating. Burial will be in Dunn’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brevard Cancer Center, 89 Hospital Dr. Suite A, Brevard, NC 28712. Perry’s family would like to personally thank the staff of The Oaks of Brevard, the Brevard Cancer Center’s Dr. Shante Lucas, Transylvania Regional Hospital, Asheville Eye Associates, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Looking Glass Eye., and Dr. Ruffin Benton for the caring and unconditional love you have shown my dad through this difficult battle.
