Charles Petit

Charles Russell Petit, 90, of Rosman, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 14, 2017. He was the son of the late Oto and Ida Whitmire Petit. He was preceded in death by his brothers; Leo and Frank and sisters; Reba and Polly. Charles was devoted to his family, church, and country. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Rosman, and the Shriners Organization. He enjoyed working, especially in his gardens and talking with friends. He served a distinguished career in the U.S. Army and retired with 24 years of service. He entered in the Army in August, 1945 and retired in April 1970. He served 3 tours in Korea, 1946-47, 1956–57, and 1965–66. He was awarded a direct commission as a 2nd LT in the Infantry in 1952. He served for 4 years in Germany from 1948–52, 3 years in Hawaii from 1960–63 and 2 years in Iran from 1968–70. He retired in April of 1970. He held ranks of PVT, PFC, CPL, SGT, SSGT, SFC, MSGT, 2nd LT, 1st LT, Capt., Maj, and LT Col. He also served his community with the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Department and retired with 20 years of service as a Chief Deputy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Ann Petit. Also surviving are his 3 children and their spouses; Roger and Sharon Petit, Eric and Cindy Petit, and Sherry Petit, sister; Bonnie Aiken and brother, Joe Petit. He enjoyed 5 grandchildren; Whitney Lorenz, Cameron Petit, Kayla Shaughnessy, Holly Hunter, and Candace Petit and one great grandchild, Ellie Shaughnessy. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24 Dad, you will be missed greatly. The memories you have created will be etched into so many minds. We will all meet again someday. Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Transylvania County ROTC Program. Funeral services will be held 2pm, Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12pm until 2pm. Interment will follow the service in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with military graveside rites conducted by the Transylvania County Honor Guard.
