Ernest Chesney

March 14, 1956 May 23, 2016 Ernest Dexter Chesney was born in the Poplar Springs community of Sanford, N.C. to the late Susie Marie Snipes and Ernest Chesney on March 14, 1956. He was born into a large family where love glistened as the family frequently catered to his needs as he was the only boy in the home for many years. Ernest attended W.B. Wicker Elementary School in his early years later moving to Lee County Senior High School where many of his fishing buddies also attended school. Motorcycle riding and fishing were his most favorite hobbies. He especially loved sharing his fishing stories whether he bought the fish home or not. Another love he had was his 30+ years of employment at Argos Ready-Mixed Concrete here in Sanford. He frequently referred to the concrete business as “our company” and the employees as “my brother at work.” There were so many stories about the Mrs. Barbara’s’ that you would have thought they were his sisters (Mrs. Barbara Cox and Mrs. Barbara Norris). A greater love was his love for his church and church family. Sometimes he would speak so endearingly about them that Valorie would have to remind him that the bible said to “forsake all others and to cleave unto his wife.” As a devoted member of Poplar Springs African Methodist Episcopal Church, Ernest served as the church treasurer, trustee, steward, sang in the Male Chorus and Mass Choir, served on the Usher board and not only attended Sunday School but served this last conference year as the Sunday School Superintendent. In addition, he cooked for many plate selling’s, homecomings, church anniversaries, assisted in keeping the facility clean and kept the church lawn well-manicured. What many of you may not know is that on his 2nd date with Valorie, he taught her how to drive his riding mower so she could help him maintain the church lawn. Did she enjoy it? “YES!” Those who knew and loved him best knew him as honey, daddy, bubba-licious, my boy, bubbie, fuddy-duddy, my brudda, and uncle bubba. Although they knew that sometimes his patience would grow weary, they knew that he was a provider, nurturer, a friend, a man with a great since of humor, a man of strength and courage and that he LOVED of the Lord! Ernest is survived by his wife, Valorie Irving, of the home; his two daughters, Kristin of the home; Elizabeth of Winston Salem, N.C. He leaves to morn his sisters Ann Faulcon of Gardena, California, Helen Chesney Dorsett (W.C), “Cat.” Chesney Marsh and Mary Chesney, all of Sanford. He leaves one brother Floyd Chesney (Marcie) of Sanford. Surviving is a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Susie Marie Chesney, a sister Jennie M. Beasley and a brother Purvis Snipes all of Sanford.
