Lorenzo Stevens

After a brief illness, Lorenzo Stevens departed this life unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 22, 2017. The youngest of six children (five girls and one boy), he was born July 24, 1943 in Savannah, Georgia, to Henrietta Stevens-Sloman and Braxton Cooper. He received his schooling in the Chatham County School System. Lorenzo began working in his teen years for Hunter Army Airfield until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 during the Vietnam era. After Basic Training and AIT, his first duty assignment was in Germany for about six months, then to the Republic of Vietnam. He was injured there and returned to the States. After an assignment in Fort Hood, Texas, he went back to the Republic of Vietnam a second time where he was injured again. This time, he was reassigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for recuperation. While in the Republic of Vietnam, he served with the Americal Division and the 2d Field Force respectively. Although Lorenzo was a Vietnam Veteran, he would reminisce and say he has no regrets, that he would do it again. Some of his military duty locations were Giessen, Germany, Fort Riley, Kansas, Fort Sill,Oklahoma, Fort Hood, Texas, Bayreuth, Germany, Camp Stanley, South Korea and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His primary military occupation specialty was 13B-Field Artillery and secondary 94B-Food Services Specialist. Upon retirement from the military in 1988, Lorenzo went on to work for Army and Air Force Exchange before starting a new career working for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Engineering Service. He later retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2003. Lorenzo was a “people person” and was well known and liked by many. He loved fishing and spent a lot of time playing cards with his friends. He was always available to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was most affectionately known as “Big Man” and “Pops.” Lorenzo was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Dorothy, Eunice, Trudy, Corinthia and Frances; two sons, Gregory (August 2010) and Stacy (2013). Although Lorenzo is gone, he will not be forgotten. He will be sadly missed by: his spouse Deloris of 53 years; two sons, Donnie Stevens, Sr. (Tomica) of Fayetteville, NC and Lorenzo Stephens, Jr. (Elaine) of Rural Hall, NC; grandsons, Donnie Stevens, Jr., Alexander Stevens and Brandon Stevens; in-laws, June and Darrell Howard of Montgomery, AL, Betty Addison of Fayetteville, NC, Paulnette and Aaron Green of Fayetteville, NC and Ilov Addison of Savannah, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
