Dorothy Fitzgerald Obituary

Devoted wife, stepmother, grandmother, sister, and aunt went to be with her savior January 13, 2021. Dot was born February 11, 1932, the oldest of seven children. The daughter of Dewey Edison Byers and Katie Irene Richards, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Ralph, and Steve Byers, and by her husband, James Everett Fitzgerald, who passed away September 13, 1998. She is survived by two stepdaughters, Janet Towery (Gary) and Kathryn Lynch (John), her brother-in-law Dr. George Fitzgerald (Stella); her sister Mamie B. Brown (Wayne) brothers Dewey E. Byers, Mitchell J. Byers, and James M. Byers (Jo). She was loved by her grandchildren; Joseph Boger, Michelle Boger, James Towery, J.D. Lynch, great grandchildren Dylan Boger, Deven Boger and Keely Chisholm as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dorothy, “Dot”, “Aunt Dot” Fitzgerald was a pillar of strength and service to her family, and to Goshen Presbyterian Church, where she became a member in 1949. A tireless support to many people in need of care and comfort, Dot ministered to the elderly, the developmentally disabled, and sick. She was a rock to many family members in times of illness and hardship. She was also fond of children and spent many hours at Vacation Bible School, and Sunday school, where she was much loved. Dot loved to travel, enjoying many outings, trips and especially cruises. She graduated from Belmont High in 1951 and worked for Duke Power for 35 years. Aunt Dot was a force of nature in her devotion to the Lord, her family, and church. She has well earned the peace of knowing, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death,”. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a private family gathering will be held, followed at a later date by a memorial service honoring Dorothy’s memory and the glory of Christ. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goshen Presbyterian Church, 380 Woodlawn Street Belmont, NC 28012. A simple Service is serving the family.
