Marlene Tarter Obituary

Marlene Carole Lane Tarter, of New Bern, NC and formerly of Bristol, TN, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2017 following a long illness. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Marlene was born July 12, 1935 in Bristol, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Luther Lane, sister, Vivian Hockett, and her beloved husband of 56 years, Harry Lee “Satch” Tarter. She is survived by her children, son Brett and wife Amy of Franklin, TN, daughter, Joni Tarter Pittman and husband Lupton of Raleigh, NC, two grandchildren Harry Tyler Tarter of Knoxville, TN, and Huston Lee Tarter of Franklin, TN, sisters Nadeen Hunt and Clara Chapman of Bristol, and several nieces and nephews and cherished friends. After graduating from Bristol Tennessee High School, Marlene graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Emory & Henry College where she was a member of Kappa Phi Alpha Sorority, Vice-President of the Bachelor of Science Nursing Class, and Sweetheart of Beta Lambda Zeta Fraternity. She also received her nursing degree from Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to both serve as a nurse and teach nursing for several years. Marlene married Harry Lee “Satch” Tarter on August 22, 1959 at Anderson Street United Methodist Church in Bristol, with Satch’s high school buddy the Reverend Donald J Hill officiating. Devoted Methodists, Marlene and Satch went on to be very active at State Street UMC in Bristol, First UMC in Charlottesville, VA and Centenary UMC in New Bern, NC. A woman of many talents and interests, Marlene was an avid artist, golfer, gardener, and decorator. She won many awards in local and regional art shows and loved seeing her works adorn the homes of many of her friends and family. She was active in the Ladies Golf Association for many years, and devoted much time and service with the Junior Women’s Club and Border Guild of Bristol. In New Bern, Marlene continued to enjoy golfing, taught at Craven County Community College and had her own decorating business. She was a founding member of the local “YaYa’s” and loved entertaining and planning their monthly gatherings. She also loved cheering on her husband’s Tennessee Volunteers as well as her own Emory & Henry Wasps. After retiring, Marlene and Satch continued to remain active in their church, and loved travelling with friends and spending time with family, most especially their beloved grandsons. Always friendly, stylish, ready with a smile, and compassionate, Marlene will be greatly missed. The family wishes to extend special appreciation to the Reverend Donald and Mrs. Peggy Hill, The Reverend Susan Pate, The Reverend Rick Moser and the congregation of Centenary United Methodist Church of New Bern. The family would also like to thank the staff of Homeplace of New Bern, Community Care & Hospice, and SECU Hospice of Johnston Health. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery, 839 Bluff City Hwy, Bristol, TN at 3:00 PM on October 7, 2017. The family will receive friends immediately following the service, and Marlene will be interred alongside her beloved Satch, at long last together again with God.
