Alfred Urban Obituary

Alfred Paul Urban Alfred Paul Urban, 90, passed away February 24, 2020 at his home in Rutherfordton. A native of Hodgkins, IL, he was the son of the late Anthony and Margaret Rovny Urban. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church since 1988 and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th degree. Al was a US Army veteran, serving with the Signal Corps from 1950-52, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina from 1994 until 2019, traveled with First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton to assist hurricane victims for multiple disasters. Al was always willing to lend a hand to those in need of assistance, be it a stranded motorist in a snowstorm or a fellow parishioner needing a light switch or a door repaired. He could fix just about anything. Al grew up in the Chicago area, where he worked in the plastics industry as a plant manager. His career took him from Chicago, Rockford, Danville (Illinois) to Baltimore, then finally to Rutherfordton, where he finished his career with Leggett & Platt. He retired to Rutherfordton but never seemed to quit working on something. He was an avid sportsman, with his passions being golf with all his friends and fishing with anyone willing to go out on the blue water. Throughout the years, Al won many golf tournaments and had multiple top 10 finishes in the U.S. Senior Olympics. He loved fishing out of the Outer Banks, on the Chesapeake Bay and up into Canada in his younger years. Always the adventurer, he would travel with his wife Barbara to visit family and friends throughout the US. Together they went on multiple cruises with family to the Caribbean, Central America and Bermuda. Summers were always a chance to visit with family, where a trip to the beach was a favorite destination. Al loved long walks on the beach in the sun. Camping was a favorite activity during his younger days. One of his fondest memories was the trip he took to Croatia and Italy with his eldest daughter, Sandy, where he was able to visit his father’s boyhood home in Trieste. During the trip he was able to meet cousins who bore the original family name of Urbancic, which was shortened when his father first arrived in the United States. Al is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Urban; children, Sandra Swaim (Charles Albanese), Susan Oestmann (James), Kathy Dalton (Craig), Gary Urban (Christina), Elizabeth Baumrind, Terrie Boyd (William), Julie Finan (Phillip Staines); sixteen grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren; sister, Margaret Urban. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by siblings, Francis Urban, Donald Urban, Victor Urban, and James Urban.
