Caroline Davis

Caroline Heath Davis, 84, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Falls River Village and Court, Raleigh, NC. Born on December 2, 1931 in Raleigh, NC, she was the oldest daughter of the late Forrest Gage Heath and Mary Hamilton Van Dyke Heath. She was a graduate of Needham Broughton High School and St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh and she attended Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA. She worked as secretary to NC Secretary of State Thad Eure. On August 21, 1953, she married the late William Lynch Davis of Mt. Olive, NC and they raised three daughters. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Davis Morlok (Ted), of Anderson, SC, Sally Davis Baker (Dr. Erwin) of Chapin, SC, and Jocelyn Davis Rezek (Michael), of Raleigh, NC, her grandsons, Theodore Heath Morlok, Asheville, NC, William Erwin Baker, Chapin, SC, Dr. Charles Kaighn Morlok, Charlotte, NC, Christian Davis Baker, Charleston, SC, a granddaughter, Mary Alyssa Grace Rezek, Raleigh, NC and two great-granddaughters, Iris Evangeline Morlok and Gwen Elizabeth Morlok, Asheville, NC. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sally Heath Ellis and survived by four nieces. Mrs. Davis was an active member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian church where she served on the Prayer Group, Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Christian Action Committee, and Historian on the Presbytery of Western North Carolina Committee. She belonged to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution – Griffith Rutherford Chapter where she served as Regent. She also held the following State Chairman positions: Membership; American History Month; Insignia; and the Motion Picture, Radio & Television. She served as State Historian during the Bicentennial, President of the State Officers Club, and was National Vice-Chairman of the Motion Pictures, Radio, & Television Commission. She was a member of the National Vice Chairman Club and received the Williams-Hampton Award. Mrs. Davis belonged to the National Society of Colonial Dames XVIII. She was Organizing President of the Hickory Nut Gorge Chapter, State Chairman of the Historical Markers Committee, State Organizing Secretary, State 1st Vice-President, State President, Honorary State President, served on the National Credentials Committee, and the National Tellers Committee. She was also a member of the Daughters of American Colonists and Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims. She was a Charter member and founder of the Rutherford County Historical Society and the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County. When she had oversite of records unavailable in legal areas she published three volumes of Rutherford County Abstracts of Wills and Deeds. Mrs. Davis also served as a member of the Rutherfordton Hospital Auxiliary and served 36 years with Meals on Wheels and with the Jericho Road Soup Kitchen. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Davis will be held at Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 31st at 2:00 PM with the Dr. Don Scofield officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held at the Rutherfordton City Cemetery Rutherfordton, NC on Wednesday January 27th, 2016 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1133, Rutherfordton, NC 28139 or to Jericho Road Soup Kitchen, PO Box 2121, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
