Mrs. Cathy Baynard Athanaelos age 70 of Courtland Street passed away Saturday April 15, 2017 while being cared for at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC. A native of Rutherford County, Cathy is a daughter of the late Tan Havard Baynard and Eliza Mae Philbeck Baynard. She is retired from the Rutherford County Public School System where she worked as a teacher’s assistant. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Paul Athanaelos of the home, one daughter Tanya Athanaelos of Atlanta, GA, one sister Nancy Walker of Spindale, NC, one brother Bobby Baynard of Ellenboro, NC as well as a number of other relatives and friends. A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held from 2 – 4 PM Saturday April 22, 2017 at Crowe’s Mortuary 118 US Hwy 74A Rutherfordton, NC. In lieu of flowers Cathy requested that memorials be made to Spindale United Methodist Church for the Rutherford County Schools Backpack Program or to the church’s bereavement meal fund 381 Mill Street Spindale NC 28160. Cathy was laid to rest at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Forest City, NC following a private service for her family.
