Dean Burgess

Dean Burgess, age 85, of Spindale completed his journey here on Earth Sunday, May 20th at Hospice House after a period of declining health. A native of Polk County, he was born February 5th 1927. The youngest of eight children born to the late William Walter and Mamie Arledge Burgess. He was a 1944 graduate of Sunney View High School, the former owner of Dean’s Grocery in Spindale, retired salesman. Attended First Baptist Church in Spindale, where he was a member of the Second Chance Sunday School Class. He was a Veteran, serving in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Glennon. Was a member of the local VFW. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Loree McGuinn Burgess; two infant brothers, sisters, Blannie Jackson of Edneyville NC, Mary Carpenter of Celina, Texas; Brothers Josh and Clarence both of Mill Spring, Charlie of Rutherfordton. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Avis King and Husband Robert of Gilkey, grandchildren Chris King of Forest City. Mandy K. Taylor and husband Matt and their children Emma and Sarah of Rutherfordton. A number of loving and caring nieces and nephews, among those are Brenda and Bobby Lynch that helped provide his care. Funeral services will be held at 6PM on Tuesday, May 22 at the Chapel of Crowe’s Mortuary Rutherfordton, NC with Dr. Keith Stephenson, Rev. Charles Swink, and Rev. Andy Evans officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services with Military Honors rendered by the Rutherford County Veteran’s Honor Guard will be held 10:30AM Wednesday May 23 at Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery in Polk County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to Hospice of Rutherford County, POB 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
