Donald Ray Coffey

Donald Ray Coffey age 69 went to play the back nine on the other side of the pearly gates on Saturday October 24, 2015 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County he was a son of the late Paul “Red” and Lorena Haulk Coffey. Don was a retired mail carrier of 37 years who not only delivered mail but carried kindness to his residents. He loved sports and was well known as “Coach Coffey” for over 30 years. He was inducted into the East Rutherford High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 for football, basketball and baseball. He is survived by his wife Marlene Hooper Coffey of the home, two daughters Allyson Galloway and husband Mark of Forest City, NC and Melony Bailey of Forest City, NC; a twin sister Donnis Head of Forest City, NC; three stepdaughters – Peggy Horne of Forest City, NC, Annette Blanton and husband Neil of Greensboro, and Lynn Wells of Forest City, NC; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of lifelong friends such as Phillip Godfrey and golf buddies Tony Fowler, Cooter Robbins and Jimmy Martin. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 6 PM on Thursday October 29, 2015 at Spencer Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Caldwell, Rev. Wayne Toney and Rev. Kelly Settlemyre officiating. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center of Spencer Baptist Church from 4 – 5:45 PM Thursday October 29, 2015. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to The Spencer Baptist Church Building Fund 187 North Oak Street Spindale, NC 28160. Online condolences may be made at www.crowemortuary.com. Crowe’s Mortuary Rutherfordton, NC is assisting the family of Donald Coffey.
