Elizabeth Gibson Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Barbara Augustine Gibson of Albany, GA, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed from this life on January 9th, 2012 at the age of 90 at the Hospice House of Rutherford County NC, with family by her side. Betty was born on April 14th, 1921 in Racine, Wisconsin to Leland Brown Augustine and Ella Marion Evans Augustine. She was the first of two children and is survived by her sister, Marion Augustine Schlueter Davis of Naperville, Illinois. The Augustine family moved to Naperville in 1939, where Betty soon entered North Central College, where upon graduation she was bestowed the honor of Salutatorian. While studying there, she met and was courted by Gale Berdean Gibson a Little All American football player. Upon graduation, Gale entered the U.S. Marine Corps and after Basic Training, the two were married in Betty’s family home in 1942. As the family moved from coast to coast around the country, Betty enjoyed meeting new people and seeing new places. Throughout all of the changes, she was very good at maintaining her vast number of friends. Over the years, Betty enjoyed many activities. Some of her time was spent enjoying activities such as the Marine Corps Wives Club, Albany Newcomers Club, over 30 years of involvement in her church and worldwide travel. She did charitable work and was an enthusiastic volunteer to her local library. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge and close behind it was reading. She also enjoyed watching baseball (Braves, Phillies and the Cubs) and ice-skating. Another one of her delights was having her cup of tea and a piece or two of chocolate. Betty is survived by her son and his life partner Stephen Gibson and Carlos Ferreria of Oakland, CA., her son and his wife Eric and Brenda Gibson of Rutherfordton, NC and her daughter and her husband Sarah and Jeffrey Davis of Lafayette, CO. She was beloved grandmother to granddaughters Kyle Taylor, Julia Taylor and Halley Gibson and grandsons Michael Gibson, Evan Davis, Connor Davis and Grant Davis. She is also survived by nephews Charles Edward (Pete) Schlueter, Thomas Alan (Tom) Schlueter, Bruce Gibson, Jimmy Gibson and nieces Mary Ellen (Mindy) Millen, Betsy Busboom , Kenova Hicks and Janeice Ives. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her husband, Gale Gibson, son Michael Lee Gibson and daughter, Barbara Gibson Taylor. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 11:00 am at First Christian Church, 416 N. Westover Drive, Albany, GA. A private family graveside service will be held at Andersonville National Cemetery where she will be interred with her husband. The family would like to thank the wonderful team at Hospice House in Forest City, NC for the tender care they gave our mother in her last couple of weeks. We also acknowledge and thank the church family of First Christian Church and Pastor Tommy Lowery.
