Helen Claytor Tolhurst, age 90, of Bostic, NC passed away on 3/1/2016. Helen was the daughter of Edward M. Claytor and Helen Barton Claytor of Edgefield, SC In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Claytor, M.D. of Charleston, SC, her sister, Virginia Manning of Greenville, SC, her daughter Judith Ann Long of Dallas, TX, and her husband, Robert A. Tolhurst Sr. of Bostic, NC. Left to cherish her memory are 3 sons, Capt. Robert A. Tolhurst Jr, USN-retired of King George, Virginia, John Tolhurst, M.D. of Bostic, NC, Charles Tolhurst of Cincinnati, OH, daughter Mari Tolhurst Callaway, PA-C of Port Charlotte, Florida; nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Helen Claytor Tolhurst was born in Edgefield, SC Jan 16, 1926. Her father was an Episcopal minister. After high school graduation she attended the Maryland Institute of Art in the fall of 1943, but left school to marry her husband Robert A. Tolhurst, an Army-Air Corps pilot at the time. During WW II while he was overseas, flying P-47's, she worked for Georgia Bell in Augusta, GA and Flexible File in Fremont, OH, his hometown. After the war, they lived in Atlanta, while her husband attended Georgia Tech to become an aeronautical engineer. He subsequently rejoined the Air Force and they lived in Washington, DC, Dayton, OH, Tokyo, Japan, and they then returned to Dayton to finish his career in the Air Force. She worked for Field Enterprises Educational Corporation at this time. They moved to Hopkins, SC in 1973 and she worked for the First National Bank and became an instrument rated Private Pilot. She served on the Central Midlands Regional Planning Council and other local community organizations. They moved to Rutherford County, NC in 1993 where she belonged to the Art Guild, and taught oil painting in Continuing Education at ICC for a brief period, then retired to care for her husband after he had a major stroke. At the time of his death, January 16, 2016, they had been married for 72 years. In lieu of flowers, please donate memorials to the charity of your choice. Graveside services will be held in Hopkins, SC at St. John's Episcopal Church on March 19, 2016 at 11:00 am.
