Herman Green

Herman Eugene Green, 94, of Rutherfordton, died Friday, October 29 at Hospice House. Born and raised in Cliffside, he was a son of the late Nollie D. and Florence Estelle Ramsey Green. He was a graduate of Cliffside High School and played football at Gardner Webb College and Wofford College. After earning his Master’s degree,he began his teaching career at Cliffside, and later taught math and science and coached football at RS Central High School. He was principal at Ruth School and retired from Rutherfordton Elementary, having served as principal there for 26 years. Mr. Green designed and implemented the Adult High School Diploma program for ICC and the Rutherford County Board of Education. Mr. Green served in the Army in WWII as an education officer in Europe and the Pacific theaters. He held the ranks of Captain and Major in the NC National Guard. Mr. Green was a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Spindale and Rutherfordton and was a member of the Retired School Teacher’s Association. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marge Tedford Green of the home; two daughters, Pat Bennett and Rachel Bracebridge, both of Rutherfordton; four brothers, Bob Green of Cliffside, Ted Green of Gaffney, SC, Perry Green of Fountain Inn, SC and Bill Green of South Dakota; two sisters, Betty Koon of Lake Lure and O’neida German of Newport News, VA; one aunt, Myrtle Mashburn of Cliffside; seven grandchildren, Scott Thomas of Fort Mill, SC, Charles Thomas of Shelby, Donna Fincannon of Spindale, Lisa Mativi-Sudol of Ohio, Jamie Hollander of Rutherfordton, Corey Bridges of Indiana and Jacob Bridges of Shelby; six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Herman Green Jr. (Buddy) and Michelle Harris. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 31 at 4 PM at Crowe’s Chapel with Rev. Dean Baughn officiating. Interment will follow in the Rutherfordton City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
