Lucille Daniel

Lucille (Lucy) Hampton Daniel, Ph.D., age 87, of Tryon Estates and formerly of Green Hill, died Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Hospice House of Rutherford County. She was the daughter of the late George Edgar and Jennie Lee Hampton. She grew up active in Green Hill Baptist Church, was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton where she participated in the Welcome Table mission, and attended Tryon Presbyterian Church while residing at Tryon Estates. Lucy was a graduate of RS Central High School and Women’s College of Greensboro. She received her Master’s from WCU and, at age 65, earned her Doctorate from ECU. She began teaching at RS Central High School and also taught at W.R. Odell and Northwest Cabarrus High Schools. She returned to Rutherford County, teaching at East Rutherford and RS Central, where she dedicated most of her career. While at RS Central, she received the NC Western Region Outstanding Teacher Award, NC Science Teacher Association Distinguished Service in Science Education Award, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics presented by President Ronald Reagan. Lucy also established the first A.P. Biology class in Rutherford County Schools and developed a culture center lab that was run by her students. Lucy served as a Science Education Consultant and began authoring science textbooks while at RS. After retiring, she continued writing, authoring or co-authoring over 526 textbooks for Merrill, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill/Glencoe. Lucy was inducted into the Rutherford County Schools Foundation Hall of Fame in 2014. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 54 years. Lucy and her husband Glenn established the Glenn and Lucille Hampton Daniel Foundation in 2005 to serve the community they loved for charitable, educational, religious, and scientific purposes. Lucy received the Rotary Club of Rutherford County Ernie Ross Service Above Self Award in 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband H. Glenn Daniel and brother-in-law Fred Arrowood. She is survived by a brother in heart Dan Kurkendall, sister-in-law Brenda Arrowood, nieces Shay Guffey and husband Larry and Shawn Parker, 1 great niece, 4 great nephews, 1 great-great nephew, close cousin Dr. Bob Morgan, and many beloved friends. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton with Dr. Sydnor Thompson, III officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Center. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Glenn and Lucille Hampton Daniel Foundation, P.O. Box 185, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
