Mamie Morris Obituary

The book of life began on August 19, 1931 for Mamie Toms Morris. She was born in Rutherford County, NC to William Spurgeon Toms and Lonnie Blanton Toms. She was the fourth child born into the family of six children. Mamie received her formal education from Rutherford County Public School, graduating from New Hope High in 1949. She graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem State) in 1953. She completed certification from Western Carolina University in 1978 to work in the Special Education Department at Spindale Elementary School. She retired from public teaching in June of 1987 after 30 years of service. After her retirement, she took some courses at ICC to learn the computer. Mamie was baptized at an early age and remained a faithful Christian until she went to join our Heavenly Father. Growing up in a Christian home, she was a member of Gold Hill Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Deaconess and Bible School Worker. Mamie and Charlie were high school friends and they were married on May 27th 1956. She was a devoted wife for 63 years. To this union they were blessed with a loving daughter. She was a faithful friend, neighbor and caregiver. She enjoyed studying geography, reading the scriptures, talking to friends and loved ones and working with the Church Scholarship Fund. Mamie was a quiet person with a warm smile. She was known to be quite humorous at times. Her love for life kept her quite busy until her illness. She was ill for several years but she bore it patiently. She was preceded in death by her parents William Spurgeon and Lonnie Blanton Toms, her two sisters Dorothy Sheppard and Edna Washburn, her 3 brothers John Henry Toms, William Spurgeon Toms, Jr., and James Toms. She leaves behind her husband Charlie Morris, one daughter, Tammy Whiteside and a son-in-law, Malcom Whiteside. She also leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. Services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday August 28th 2019 at Crowe’s Chapel with the Reverend Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday night August 27th 2019 from 5-6PM at Crowe’s Mortuary. Online condolences may be made at www.crowemortuary.com.
