Ruby Callahan Groom, 85, of Union Mills entered into eternal rest, as a result of a massive stroke, on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Buncombe County and a resident of Union Mills for many years, she was the daughter of the late Paul B. and Carrie Burrell Callahan. She was preceded in death by her siblings Alfred, Hershel, Paul Jr. (Buddy), Stella and Margaret. Ruby retired from Gilkey School cafeteria after 20 plus years of service. She loved bluegrass (especially the Forney Mountain Boys), cowboy movies, making flower arrangements and ceramics, but most of all she loved and cherished her children. She was caring, giving, and always saw the best in others and put them first. She was a very special Mom and friend, and will forever be in our hearts. Ruby is survived by her children, Paul Ervin Forrest (Phyllis), Carolyn Williams (Marcell), Buck Roberts, Harold (Happy) Roberts (Teresa), Angela Hawkins, Gordon Morgan, and Michele Weiss (Chris); fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Sunday, June 16 at Crowe's Mortuary with Rev. Inez Ray and Rev. Jimmy Koone officiating. Interment will follow in Eternal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 4 PM until 6 PM at Crowe’s Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Care Partners Solace, 21 Belvedere Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
