Sam Ayers

Sam Warren Ayers died on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the age of 90. An alumnus of the School of Journalism at The University of South Carolina. Variously employed as reporter or city editor for three South Carolina newspapers: The Columbia State, The Charleston News and Courier and The Greenville Piedmont. Also, a feature writer for the Chicago Tribune. Retiring as City Editor of the Greenville Piedmont. Moving to Rutherford County in 1977, he and his late wife Kathryn, were owners until their retirement of S&K Dry Cleaners and Washerette in Rutherfordton. He was a former vestryman and junior warden at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, Rutherfordton, NC. A World War II veteran of the US Marine Corps, 3rd Joint Assault Signal Co. (3rd JASCO), he participated in the Guam and Iwo Jima campaigns. His family includes daughter, Kay Ayers Reid, of Taylors, SC: companion Wilma Holmes of the home, Rutherfordton; brothers, Lum Ayers, deceased, Tom Ayers and Joe Ayers of Reidsville, NC, several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Price and Jean Damon. Services will be held at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, 395 N. Main St. Rutherfordton, NC, 2:00pm, Saturday, February 6, 2016. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Saint Francis Episcopal Church.
