Obituary for Thelma Mae Flack

Spindale, NC
Thelma Edwards Flack, 92, of Spindale, passed away October 26th, 2015. She was born on October 30, 1922 to Shakespeare and Lillie Mae Long Edwards of Gilkey.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Lewis Flack, of the home. On June 13, 1945, the same day Jack returned to Rutherford County from the war, they were married in Shelby. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
She is also survived by her daughter, Kathy Flack Cabaniss and granddaughter, Katelyn Cabaniss of Spindale; her son, Ken and his wife Lucy of Rutherfordton; grandsons John L. Flack of Conway, SC and Patrick Flack and his wife, Jamie, and stepson, Jameson of Rutherfordton.
Naomi Edwards Yelton, of Rutherfordton, is her surviving sister. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and his wife Gilmer and Nancy Edwards; her sister and her husband Katherine and Joe Justice; and brother-in-law Leonard Yelton.
Thelma Flack was fiercely loving and loyal to family and friends. She grew up on a working farm in what is now Gilmer Edwards Road. She was awarded the J.L. Taylor award in the class of 1940 at R-S Central High School. This is still the highest award presented to a senior based on character, leadership, scholarship, and service.
Her working years were mainly in Human Resources at Stonecutter and Spindale Mills. She briefly worked at Spindale Town Hall as secretary. She retired as bookkeeper from the family business, Spindale Tire Service, in 1984.
She was a 31 year cancer survivor who dealt with its aftermath with courage and grace.
Mrs. Flack enjoyed reading, creating elegant works of needle point, shopping for antique furniture which she would strip and refinish. She was an accomplished seamstress and a gifted health conscious cook. She received much pleasure from her small, yet prolific backyard rose garden. She loved long walks; knowing the streets of Spindale like the back of her hand.
Since 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Flack were committed to helping make Spindale a great place to live and raise children. They both worked hard at their respective jobs. They generously supported school functions and projects. The MYF program at Spindale United Methodist Church was extremely important to them. They are fondly remembered for frequently chaperoning youth social gatherings from Teen Club at the Spindale House to high school dances at the Rutherfordton Clubhouse.
In 2011, the town of Spindale chose them to be the Grand Marshalls of the Christmas Parade. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were grateful to be honored.
Memorials may be made to the church of your choice, to the American Cancer Society 250 Williams Street Atlanta, GA 30303-1002, or to Hospice of Rutherford County POB 336 Forest City, NC 28043.
Services will be held at Spindale United Methodist Church on Friday October the 30th at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM at the Church. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills at 2:00PM.
