Virginia Campbell

Virginia Hopkins Campbell, 85, passed away peacefully at Spartanburg Regional Hospital with her family by her side on Monday, December 2, 2013. Ginny was born October 1, 1928, in Richmond, VA, and was the loving daughter of Pete and Thelma Hopkins. After graduating from Morrison High School in Newport News, VA, in 1945, she worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Russell and later worked in the accounting department for First National Bank. After moving to Greensboro, NC, she held secretarial positions at Aycock and Mendenhall Junior High Schools and ended her working career as a secretary at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary School in Charlotte, NC. She retired with a total of 24 years of service. Ginny was a devout Christian and a member of Spindale United Methodist Church. She was a truly devoted wife and mother. Her greatest joy was raising her two girls and being with her family. She loved all of God’s creatures, especially her dog Jessie. She was passionate about the Christmas season and red roses were her favorite flowers. Playing bridge was one of her favorite pastimes along with reading and walking the beach at Topsail Island. Ginny is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Edgar Lee Campbell, Jr. of the home; two daughters: Ginger Meador and husband Steve of Rutherfordton and Nancy Elliott and husband Bill of Loganville, GA; four grandchildren : Rich Meador of Fayetteville, NC, John Meador of Rutherfordton, NC, Dr. Rachel Norman and husband Austin of Marietta, GA, Becca Elliott of Atlanta, GA, and three great grandchildren: Madison, Campbell and Brantley Paige Meador… as well as a number of other dear relatives and close friends. A celebration of Ginny’s life will be held at 4 PM Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel with receiving of friends held one hour prior to the service. Interment services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Spindale United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 241, Spindale, NC, 28160 or to The Humane Society of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 998, Rutherfordton, NC, 28139.
