William "Bill" Mauney Rutherfordton, North Carolina Obituary

William "Bill" Mauney

William “Bill” Glenn Mauney, Sr. of Rutherfordton, passed away Friday February 25, 2011 at his home surrounded by his wife, their four children and son-in-law. Bill was born January 7, 1934 in Cleveland County, NC, the youngest of four to Ralph Theodore Mauney, Sr. and Lillie Mae Summerlin Mauney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph T. Mauney, Jr. and Robert Edward Mauney, Sr. Bill was reared on a farm in the Elizabeth Baptist Church Community. He attended Shelby City Schools. In junior and senior high schools he was a member of the Shelby High School Band playing the baritone. He attended Gardner Webb College (now university) and assisted in organizing their first band. Afterwards he enlisted in the U.S.Army, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC and in the 82nd Division Band playing the baritone. HE was also a member of the chorus and sang with a vocal quartet that entertained in the NCO Club and some officers clubs. Fortunately the USA was not engaged in a “hot” war at the time, so Bill was never in combat. After two years of military service he joined the management of Roses Variety Stores where he worked many years, then several years with the N.C. Department of Corrections. Later he worked in textile management becoming a superintendent at the Duckhead Plant in Maiden, NC from which he retired. Bill then started something he truly enjoyed, restoring and refinishing antiques and collectible furniture, buying and selling at auction, doing so until he became disabled. On April 13, 1958 at Central United Methodist Church, Shelby, Bill wed Nancy Jane Falls. They were blessed with four children and five grandchildren with whom Bill was very playful and generous. The children were treated with several trips to the beach and mountain outings and escapades at Six Flags and Carowinds amusement parks and the N.C. Zoo. Bill and Jane entertained the grandchildren on weekends during school terms and weeks during the summer. Bill installed an above ground pool and built a large deck around it. The pool was truly enjoyed by all especially the grandchildren. In 1998 Bill and Jane treated their grandchildren to a trip to New York City to visit their son Glenn and his wife Sara; with them they toured the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, saw a Mets game at Shea Stadium and played in Central Park. Bill and Jane enjoyed dancing at home and area clubs. They attended symphony concerts in Charlotte; also attended plays in Charlotte and at the High Point Theatre. Bill enjoyed many kinds of music, especially classical which he shared with his wife and children. He also played the ukulele and sang to the family and with friends. Bill was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Bill was quite fond of animals; over the years he and Jane “owned” many cats and dogs. He built a large bird feeder and hung hummingbird feeders, thus he and Jane were bird watchers. They raised vegetables in their garden, canning and freezing produce. In 2007 Bill suffered several strokes that impaired his ablility to walk and talk. He and Jane then moved to Rutherfordton, N.C. beside their daughter, Kathy and her husband, Mike Eplee. Survivors: Wife, Jane F. Mauney of Rutherfordton, N.C.; Daughters, Eleanor M. Mauney (Ron) of Graham, N.C.; Mary Katherine “Kathy” Eplee (Mike) of Rutherfordton, N.C.; Patricia “Tricia” M.
