Obituary for William Everett Mattison

William Everett Mattison

November 4, 1948 - August 2, 2013

William Mattison, 64, a resident of Lake Lure, NC died on August 2 at Rutherford County Hospice after a year and a half battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Cobleskill, New York to the late Rodney and Gretta Mattison, he attended Berne Knox Central High School.

In 1965, William joined the United States Navy amidst the Vietnam Conflict. Decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, he was honorably discharged in 1966.

After his time in the service, William worked on the dock and drove freight trucks for Roadway Express Trucking. During his 37 year career, his safety record as a driver was impeccable, including a span late in his career until his retirement of over 1 million accident-free miles.

A fan of managing numbers, Mattison enjoyed the art of billiards, poker, and the stock market. William was a lover of all people, especially his family whom he assisted in times of physical, emotional, or financial need. His “off the wall” sense of humor and quotes, thoughts of the day, and sincere kindness will fondly be remembered by all who knew him.

The family and friends of William wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Hospice of Rutherford County for the kindness and compassion they provided through the extent of his battle with cancer.
