William Mattison

William Everett Mattison November 4, 1948 - August 2, 2013 William Mattison, 64, a resident of Lake Lure, NC died on August 2 at Rutherford County Hospice after a year and a half battle with cancer. Born and raised in Cobleskill, New York to the late Rodney and Gretta Mattison, he attended Berne Knox Central High School. In 1965, William joined the United States Navy amidst the Vietnam Conflict. Decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, he was honorably discharged in 1966. After his time in the service, William worked on the dock and drove freight trucks for Roadway Express Trucking. During his 37 year career, his safety record as a driver was impeccable, including a span late in his career until his retirement of over 1 million accident-free miles. A fan of managing numbers, Mattison enjoyed the art of billiards, poker, and the stock market. William was a lover of all people, especially his family whom he assisted in times of physical, emotional, or financial need. His “off the wall” sense of humor and quotes, thoughts of the day, and sincere kindness will fondly be remembered by all who knew him. The family and friends of William wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Hospice of Rutherford County for the kindness and compassion they provided through the extent of his battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Gillespie and a sister, Phyllis. Surviving William are two daughters, Cynthia Kunath, Lake Lure, NC and Laurie McWharten, Watkinsville, Georgia, a son, William Joseph, Silver Spring, MD, a son-in-law, John Gillespie, Lake Lure, NC two brothers, Dennis, New Haven, CT, Rodney, Berne, NY, four sisters, Anita, Fort Wayne, IN, Iona, Delancey, NY, Marguerite, Smeiterville, ID, Harriet, Santa Cruz, CA, a loving friend, Linda Thompson, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A vigil service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Crowe’s Funeral Home, 118 US Highway 74A, Rutherfordton, NC 28139. A private family interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Princetown, NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, 374 Hudlow Road, Forest City, NC 28043.
