Mrs. Bertha Mae Smyre Ferguson, 108 Prosperity Place, Statesville, departed this life on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at her residence. She was born in Iredell County on June 16, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Albert Smyre and Jessie Mae Summers Houpe. In addition to his parents, Albert Smyre and Jessie Mae Summers Houpe, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Andrew Ferguson, Sr., a brother, Glen Smyre; a sister, Louise Kyles; and four grandchildren, Robert Lee Ferguson, Johnny Eugene Bellamy, III, Johnny Eugene Bellamy, Jr., and Donald Clark, Jr.. She attended Unity High School in Statesville, N.C., and worked as a sewing machine operator in the Textile Industry. Mrs. Bertha was a member of Mt. Calvary Holiness Church and she will truly be missed. She leaves to cherish the memories of her life three sons, Carl Andrew (Christine) Ferguson, Jr. of New Haven, Connecticut, Clyde Richard Ferguson, Sr. of Statesville, and Scotland Bernard Ferguson of Winston Salem; four daughters, Marilyn Marie (Herman) Caple, Cynthia Elaine (Jimmy) Bowman, Bertha (Nate) Wood, and Beverly Eugenia Mattox, all of Statesville; five brothers, Frank Smyre of Statesville, Roger Smyre of Waco, Texas, James Houpe and Joe Sherrill, both of Charlotte, Johnny Houpe of Colorado; six sisters, Flossie Rucker, Mary (Ned) Thompson, Eva (John) Daniels, Gracie Summers, Martha Anderson, and Louise Heaggans, all of Statesville; one sister-in-law, Harriet Smyre; special friends, Iki McCray and Paulette Tucker; twenty-two grandchildren, Cedric Dion Ferguson, Angela Ferguson, Curtis Mayfield, Marcus (Carolyn) Ferguson, Gloria (Tyrone) Caple , Pam Gillion, LaKiesha (Ike) Mayfield, Monikki M. (David) Stevenson, Clyde Richard Ferguson, Jr., Clyde Richard Ferguson, III, Tomeka Ferguson, Marcus Antonio Ferguson, Ashley Nicole (Michael) Ward, Bryan Keith Wilson, Jeremy Bernard Ferguson, Carl Andrew Ferguson, III, Nicholas Stevenson, and Falita Bennett; a host of other relatives, cousins, and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019, 3:30 pm at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, Statesville. Elder Carl Ferguson will officiate. Members of the family will receive friends from 2:30-3:30 p.m. They will assemble at the residence of Elaine Bowman, 108 Prosperity Place, Statesville, at all other times.
