David Steele

Mr. David Nealy Steele Mr. David Nealy Steele, 78, of Jamaica, NY, formerly of Statesville, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at the Silver Crest Nursing Facility, Jamaica, NY. David was born in Iredell County, January 17, 1937, and was the son of the late Harvey Lee Steele and Susie Montgomery Steele. He was preceded in death by three sons, David Angelo Steele, Harvey Lee Steele and Kenneth King; a brother, Harvey Steele and a sister, Thelma Pearson. He was married to Mary L. Mills Steele, who survives. David was a 1956 graduate of Unity High School. At an early age, he joined Greater New Mt. Olive Holiness Church. He moved to New York after high school, and furthered his education at the John Jay College in New York, receiving a degree in Criminal Law & Justice, where he gave twenty-three years of dedicated service on the New York City Police Department. In addition to his wife, Mary, he leaves to cherish the memory of his life, three sons, David Anthony Steele, Davie Neal Steele, both of New York and Kelvin (Terry) King of Statesville; five daughters, Angela (Jeffrey) Powders, Tammy K. Steele, both of Atlanta, GA, Pamela (Thomas) Singleton of New Burgh, New York, Francine M. Steele of Jamaica, New York, and Lenis Steele of West Palm Beach, FL; a brother, Henry (Essie) Steele of Statesville; a sister, Beulah Blackwell of Statesville; a sister-in-law, Mary Lois Steele of Statesville; a special friend , Margaret Ann Norman of New York; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted Friday, August 14, 2015, at 1:00 p.m., at Shiloh AME Zion Church. Reverend J. Ruth Davis will officiate, and Brother Henry Steele will eulogize. Burial will follow at the Belmont Cemetery. Mr. Steele will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:00 noon. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m., but will assemble at the residence of his brother, Henry Steele, 1589 W. Cloaninger Avenue, at all other times.
