Della Mae Thomas

Mrs. Della Mae Young Thomas, 84, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2017, following an extended illness at the Community Home Care and Hospice in Olin Village. She was born on January 19, 1933 in Burke County, and was the daughter of the late Rev. Fred Douglass Young and the late Maggie Echols Young. She was educated in the Statesville School System and completed a Bachelor’s Degree from Winston Salem State University, Winston Salem, N.C. She was employed with the Iredell Statesville School System and retired after 31 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Odell Thomas. She leaves to cherish the memory of her life, one son, Odell Williams of Morganton, sister-in-laws, Mary Harris, Coy Ann Surratt, Patty McGimpsey and Audrey Given all of Morganton, four grandchildren, Isaiah Williams of Morganton, Jeremiah Phifer of High Point, Isaiah Phifer of High Point and Krissy Surratt of Greensboro, two nieces, Marlina Surratt of Huntersville and LaCindra Phifer of High and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Friday, November 3, 2017, at 12:00 noon. at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Mark Clark will officiate and burial will follow in the Olive Hill Cemetery in Morganton, NC. Members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
