A Tribute in Memory of Mrs. Jessie Knox Bailey With long life I will satisfy you, and show you my salvation. Today, we honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Jessie Knox Bailey, 93, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She was born in Iredell County on August 19, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Dennie and Elizabeth Knox Campbell. She passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at Iredell Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. She attended the Iredell County Schools. Jessie accepted Christ at an early age. She was a virtuous woman who loved the Lord with all her heart. Jessie read her Bible every night before bedtime and her favorite scripture was Psalm 23. She was member of Mt. Vernon AME Zion Church. Jessie met and fell in love with John Robert “Rob” Bailey and they married on November 24, 1937. Together they built a firm foundation of love and respect. Robert preceded her in death on February 8, 1990, but the foundation still stands tall today. She was also preceded in death by two sons, William “Baby Brother” Bailey and Robert “Bobby” Bailey; sisters Aleece Armstrong (Charles) and Alma Knox; a grandson, Kenneth Bailey; a son-in-law, Clarence "Joe" Minor; godchildren, Dorothy Ramsey and Matthew Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, James “Jim” Bailey (Annie Mae), Georgie Minor, Lillian Sherrill (Richard) Marybelle Parker (Leon) and Glenda “Tip” Rucker (Daniel), all of Statesville; Jesse “Mack” Bailey (Wanda) of Raleigh and Tammy Martin (John) of Charlotte; a very special caregiver and daughter-in-law, Maggie Bailey of Statesville. Her grandchildren are Melissa “Missy” Summers (William) of Statesville, Richard “Burnie” Sherrill (Vicki) of Miami Beach, Florida, Leon “Porky” Parker (Jennifer) of Greensboro, Dr. K. Joi Minor of Charlotte, Denise Peak of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Minister Reba Imes (Rev. Eric) of Statesville, Stephanie Sharpe of Brandywine, MD, Scottie Sherrill of Statesville, James “Timmy” Bailey (Michelle) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Serwa Sadler (Travis) and Kristy Rogers (Chris), both of Charlotte; and Justin Bailey and mother Audrey K. Bailey of Raleigh. Her great grandchildren are Sharika Summers, Maisha Summers, Imani Sherrill, Alea’ Summers, Shaila Sherrill, Carmen Peak, Ashley Sharpe, Jesse Parker, Caleb Sadler, Breshana Sherrill, Amayah Rogers, Emanuel “RJ” Sherrill, Harlyn Sadler, Austin Rogers, and Daylen Sherrill; great-great grandchildren, Jae’lah Thompson and Ashton Summers; godchildren, James Robert Bailey, Johnny C. Jones, Stella Mae Ellis and Mary Helen Moten; nieces, Jane Grisham (Arnold) of Oakland, California, Francis Grisham (Lawrence) and Frankie Armstrong, both of Chicago, Illinois. Her great niece and nephew are Kristine Grisham Holliman and Jonathan Grisham, both of Oakland, California and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Sunday, April 12, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt .Vernon AME Zion Church with Reverend Will Funderburk will officiate and Minister Reba Parker Imes will eulogize. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Bailey will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 2:00 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends Saturday evening, April 11, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home but will assemble on Bailey Farm Road at other times.
