Joann Gaines

Mrs. Joann Simpson Gaines, 73, of 921 Knox Avenue, Statesville, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center of Statesville following an extended illness. She was born in Iredell County on October 10, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Jay Alexander and Hattie Mae Simpson. She was married to Edward Gaines who preceded her in death. Her daughter, Hattie Mae Gaines, granddaughter Laura Yvette Gaines, and her aunt Mae Frances Simpson who raised her also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and loved her family.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life two daughters, Lori Ann Gaines and Angelone Gaines, both of Statesville; two sisters, Willie Mae (Mitchell) Brawley and Barbara Clemmons; God sisters Lula Ann Simpson and Mary Elizabeth Simpson of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Jimmy Moore; grandchildren Jeff Dwayne Gaines, Anthony Bernard Gaines, Edward Dewayne Gaines, David Horne, Andrea Horne, Kaleb L. Simpson, Malaysia A. Simpson, My'Isha Gaines, Andrea Shartis Horne, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Gaines will be conducted Friday, January 12, 2018, at 5:00 PM at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home Statesville. Pastor Michael Turner will officiate. Members of the family will receive friends from 4:00 5:00 pm. They will assemble at the residence of at other times.
