These are the memories he leaves behind…
Mr. John Franklin Alexander, 64, of Vero Beach, Florida, departed this life on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at 630-24 Place South West, Vero Beach, Florida, following an extended illness. He was born in Iredell County on November 6, 1954, and was at the son of the late Mrs. Lucy “Bea” Alexander and his fathers, Johnny Byers and Willie O. T. Chambers.
He attended Morningside School and later went to the Job Corps, the Marines and worked for the lawn service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Otis John Alexander and Jeff Byers; his grandparents, Blanche Flowers Alexander, Carl Alexander, Viola Tate, James Tate, Melvin Harwell Alexander; the parents who helped raise him, Lula Mae Thompson Hairston and Harvey Lee Hairston.
He leaves to cherish the memory of his life, his wife, Vivian Alexander of the home; his sons, Shannon Alexander, Tujaun Miller, of Statesville, and Lavell Alexander of Vera Beach, Florida; his daughters, Tonisha Alexander of Vera Beach, Florida; six sisters, Mary Alexander, Alisha Kimbrough, Tandra Chambers, and Anissa Chambers, all of Statesville, Cora Cauthen of Mt. Airy and Ozell Turner of South Carolina; five brothers, Thomas (Freda) Chambers of Harmony, Shannon (Treva) Byers of Statesville, Marcus Byers of Winston-Salem, Leroy Hairston of Statesville, and James Hairston of Mt. Airy; a special nephew, Anthony (Patrice) Chambers; special nieces, Tonisha (Johnathan) Daniels of Statesville; Lesley (Jermaine) Spears of Raleigh; two aunts, Betty (Joe) Barnes of Statesville and Evangelist Grace Dean Tate of Harmony; special thanks and hat’s off to brother-cousin-friend, James Oakel; friends, James Hyde; and special nephews; other relatives and friends.
As long as life and memory last…
We will remember thee.


Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Sunday, May 31, 2020, at 3:30 p.m. at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Elder Christopher E. Daniels will officiate and Elder Thomas Chambers will eulogize. A special candle light service will be held.

There will be NO PUBLIC VISITATION, unfortunately, with the COVID-19 Virus we, at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, along with other funeral homes across the country, have been issued a mandate to limit the number of family and/or friends at funeral services. YOU CAN ONLY ENTER THE FUNERAL WITH A FUNERAL PASS WHICH WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FAMILY.
