Mary Morrison Obituary

A smile for all, a heart of gold One of the finest this world could hold Never selfish, always kind These are the blessings she leaves behind... Mrs. Mary Summers Morrison was born in Statesville, NC on a warm summer day, August 20, 1934. She was the proud daughter of the late Isaac Summers and Arleigh James Summers. Mary was studious and disciplined as a student. Despite social obstacles at that time, she graduated from Morningside High School and successfully received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Winston-Salem State University. She then attained a Master’s Degree in Education from NC A&T State University. At a young age, Mary displayed a warm and caring spirit. She used her gifts of nurturing, intellect and understanding extremely well by becoming a school teacher. Mary worked tirelessly for the Mooresville Graded School System for over 30 years, retiring in June 1997. During the early years of her life, Mary met and married Phillip A. Morrison in March 1956. Together they raised and cared for two children. Not only was her family very dear to her heart, but Mary was a woman of God with a beautiful soul who enjoyed participating in ministry. She was a lifelong member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, which later became Campbell Missionary Baptist Church. She served on numerous committees and in several roles including: Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Church Clerk, Church Secretary, Senior Choir, Vocational Bible School Coordinator, Pastor Aide Committee, as well as Mountain and Catawba Missionary Baptist Association member. Over the course of her life, Mary took the time to encourage her family, students and others around her to be successful in all they do. She was a beloved teacher in the school system and in ministry who taught her students very well. She was always ready with an inspiring word to lift the spirit or crackers and candy to feed the soul. Mary saw the best in people especially when others did not. She was strong, proud, and beautiful with a spirit of perseverance and love. Mary was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Morrison Jr. In addition to her husband, Phillip Morrison, she leaves to honor the memory of her life, her daughters, Phyllis Denise Morrison-Caldwell and Shawntee E. Morrison, both of Mooresville; two grandchildren, Phillip Caldwell (Crystal ) and Ashleigh Caldwell, both of Mooresville; one great grandchild, Kellen Caldwell of Mooresville; a son-in-law, Robert Caldwell; two sisters, Marjorie Booker and Faye Brown, both of New York, three brothers, Curtis Summers of Statesville, Isaac (Ann) Summers and Robert (Loveada) Summers, all from New York; a special friend and caregiver, Edna Adams; other relatives, church family, neighbors and friends. Mary’s life, deeds, and words were a blessing to many lives. The impact of her loving spirit is truly immeasurable. Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Campbell Missionary Baptist Church in Mooresville. Reverend Dale Wilson, Pastor, will officiate and Rev. Ivan Cowan will eulogize. Burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery in Statesville. Mrs. Morrison will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 11:30 a.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., one hour prior to the funeral service. With Love... ALL things are possible Love is a gift from GOD...
