David A. “Spike” Sponsler, 83, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday evening, June 1`7, 2017 at the Good Shepherd Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland. David was born in Ashland on June 7, 1934 and was the son of Craig and Martha (Burger) Sponsler. He attended Ashland City Schools and was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1953. He was a good basketball player and had played for the Ashland Whizkids basketball team as a youngster. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He worked as an Iron Worker for the Local 550 for many years and had been a butcher at Sponsler’s Park Market on West Main Street in Ashland. He is survived by three step children, Kelly (Nancy) McQuate of Belmont, MI; Julie (David) Brockway of Ashland and Chris (Greg) Kaufman of Canton, GA; one sister, Kay James of Ashland and one brother, Ned (Diane) Sponsler of Ashland. He is also survived by several step grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two step children, Jane (McQuate) Burgess and Tracy McQuate. In keeping with David’s wishes, there will be no visitation of services held at this time. Burial will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the OhioHealth Hospice, 335 Glessner Ave, Mansfield, Ohio 44903.
