William E. McCartney Obituary

William E. McCartney Jr. 89, formerly of Ashland, passed away Tuesday morning, October 17, 2017 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio following a short illness. Mr. McCartney was born in Galion, Ohio on July 26, 1928 and was the son of the late William E. Sr. and Edna (Bowman) McCartney. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a 30-year employee of General Motors, working in various departments at the Ontario Plant, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Galion post of the American Legion. He was an aviation enthusiast and enjoyed flying radio-controlled airplanes. He kept active as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Hospice of North Central Ohio and had tutored children at Osborn School. On November 17, 1957 William was married to Lola E. Atterholt and the couple enjoyed over 55 years of marriage until Lola’s passing on March 28, 2013. He is survived by his three children, Margaret A. Potocnik of Devon, PA; Melissa Allen of Ashland and William E. (Stacey) McCartney III of Broadview Heights, OH; three grandchildren, Jason Bergman, Shawn Bergman and Katie Allen; one great-grandson Alexander Bergman; and his feline companion, Diva. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Lola, and one sister, Janet Beck. Family graveside services will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date.
