September 10, 1923 - May 06, 2015
Katherine R. Peterson, 91, was called to her eternal home in the early morning hours of May 6th, 2015. Born September 9th, 1923 to Frederick and Lillian (Weber) Ritter in Newark, New Jersey where she grew up on Grafton Avenue and later New Street, Irvington, New Jersey, as the oldest of three children.
Her love of learning and reading everything in sight enabled her to graduate high school in 3 ½ years and directly entered Montclair State Teachers College which lead her to a teaching assignment in Far Hills School.
Through her long-time high school friend and later her sister-in-law, Ruth Trossett, she met her future husband Robert Leland Peterson, and they were married the 26th day of April in 1947. Their first son, Robert Wayne, was born in May of 1950; and their second son, John Frederick, followed in May of 1953. She continued her teaching career as a fourth grade teacher in Irvington, New Jersey, at the Florence Avenue School.
A family cottage in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, provided many happy and memorable adventures for all the Peterson, Ritter and Trossett families while the children were young. After selling the cottage prior to the huge hurricane in 1962, they explored new places during the summer months, and later Katherine and Bob shared their personal memories traveling to Hawaii, Europe, and Scandanavia either on a group tour or
In 1964, the family relocated to the Murray Hill, New Jersey area where they enjoyed all their new friends and active social calendar in the Princeton Hill Community.
In order to escape the harsh New Jersey winters and become closer to her favorite Aunt Helen Hansen, Katherine and Bob decided to spend their retirement years in sunny Florida in the summer of 1978. This gave
Katherine an opportunity to embark on a new part-time career where she became a successful real estate agent for Prudential. This did not interfere with being grandparents to Heather and Daniel because they spent two weeks over the summer with Grammy and PopPop swimming in the pool and traveling to theme parks, zoos and Hudson Beach. They also reconnected with their favorite Aunt Evie and Uncle Fred since they also
followed their sister to Florida and lived within only blocks of each other. Katherine loved to work in her rose garden, play canasta, bridge, volunteer at the Humane Society and local library tutoring in reading to elementary students. She continued to read her favorite historical novels, word searches and especially care for her feline family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1992; sister Evelyn in 2002 and Aunt Helen Hansen in 1977.
Katherine leaves her son Robert (JoAnn) Peterson; son John (Carol Ann) Peterson; grandchildren Heather (Carol Taylor) Peterson; Daniel (Theresa) Peterson; two great grandchildren, Daniel and Lucas, brother Frederick (Marie Fatigati) Ritter (Fred passed away in August 2015) and favorite cousins Dorothy and Elaine.
Family and friends may call on August 20th from 5-6 p.m. at the Nosek-McCreery Funeral Home located at 8150 Brecksville Road in Brecksville, OH, followed by a memorial service sharing Katherine’s life officiated by
Reverend Russell Martin at 6 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served in the hospitality center of the funeral home on the lower level for those wishing to share memories and stories.
