Hazel Winings-Deffren

Hazel (Sanford) Winings-Deffren, beloved wife of Wayne L. Winings for 59 years and Kenneth Deffren for 6 years, passed away on December 9, 2017. She would have turned 93 the following day. Born in Painesville, OH, Hazel graduated from Harvey High School in 1943 and continued her education at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, graduating in 1946. Along with her fulfilling career as a nurse, she was a devoted volunteer at Twin Towers' Wilson Chapel and the Variety store. Hazel is survived by three daughters, Bonnie Winings of Los Angeles, Bobbi (Gary) Weddle, of Cincinnati, and Beth (Edward) Long of Tequesta, Florida, and son Timothy (Pamela) Winings of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren, Jenny Winings, Cole Weddle, Stacey Winings, Casey (Erin) Weddle, Austin Baggett, Jack Long, Grace Long and one great-grandchild, Avery Weddle. She is also survived by two nieces, Janet (Halliburton) Milo, and Nancy Halliburton, and one nephew, Christopher Bowden. Hazel was preceded in death by parents Grace and Luther Sanford, and two sisters, Harriet Bowden and Phyllis Halliburton. Hazel was resourceful, steadfast, principled, smart and spiritual ~ an unselfish and loving woman who was always willing to laugh at herself. Beyond anything else in her life, Hazel cherished her family. Family was her joy and calling, her pride and focus, her hobby and her absolute favorite pastime. Her legacy is the affection and respect of the family she loved so much. Memorial service will be held in the Wilson Chapel at Twin Towers Retirement Community on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., with a reception following. Memorials may be made to the Twin Towers Benevolent Fund and Twin Towers Retirement Community, 5343 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45224.
