David Lloyd George Swartzlander, a true gentleman, 40-year Toledo Scale/Reliance Electric employee and avid golfer died Thursday at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was 89.
Swartzlander, who served as a union steward at the Toledo Scale Co. for years, rose through the company ranks to work in a sales/management position, retiring from Reliance Electric and moving back to Toledo in 1987. In the 1960s and 1970s, he amused children of Toledo Scale employees with his magic tricks as a clown before spreading joy to those children as Santa Claus at the annual Christmas parties.
A U.S. Army veteran, David served in the Third Division from 1943-46, seeing combat in the European Theater of World War II. In addition, he served in the Army Reserves for 15 more years reaching the rank of Master Sergeant.
David is survived by his loving wife of more than 67 years, Hazel O. Swartzlander of Toledo; his children, JoElaine Lyman of Toledo, and David G. (Diane) Swartzlander, of Seward, NE, one sister (Elizabeth), two brothers (Herbert & Grover), six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Contributions in David’s memory can be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America or the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Services will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2843 Sterns Rd., Lambertville on Thursday November 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Fellowship following services.
