Obituary for Heman Holden

Heman H. Holden, 92, of Toledo, died on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Heman was born on October 18, 1921 in Shelbyville, Tennessee to the late George and Elizabeth Holden. He had four older siblings, Jack, Bill, Elise and Hortense. When he was seven years old his family moved to Toledo. Heman was a 1939 graduate of Whitmer High School. Heman proudly served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. While stationed at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock Arkansas he met his wife of 67 years, Doris. They were married on Christmas Eve in 1946 and moved to Toledo. They relocated to Port Richey, Florida in January, 2012.
Heman worked for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company for over twenty five years. He was awarded several trips for his accomplishments. Spain was one of the favorite destinations that he and Doris visited. After retiring from National Life he was employed by AD Banker as an Instructor teaching classes to help students prepare to take their State Insurance License Exam. Heman was a caring leader who supported and encouraged his clients, staff members, and students.
Heman was a man of faith and his love and devotion to God was evident in his life. He served as an elder at the Flanders Road Church of Christ for more than twenty five years. He was never too tired or too busy to minister to others. He gave unselfishly of time and money to help support the many good works of the church.
Heman loved his family dearly and was very proud of his children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them play sports, hearing about all of their adventures, accomplishments, and service to others. He prayed daily for each one and they brought much joy to his life.
One of his most treasured experiences in recent years was participating in an Honor Flight to tour Washington, DC and visit the World War II Memorial.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris, his two children, Larry and his wife, Pat of Newport Richey, FL, Janet and her husband, Al of Portland, Maine, six grandchildren, Brett, Todd, Jamie and his wife, Erin, Kelli and her husband, Aaron, Ashley, and Brooke, three great grandchildren, Carter, Harper, and Simon, a sister, Elise Marable of Toledo, and wonderful nephews and nieces.
Visitation hours will be on Thursday, March 27th from 5 – 8 PM at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue, Toledo. A memorial service and celebration of Heman’s life will be held at 11 AM, Friday, March 28th at Ansberg-West. His interment will be in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
