Obituary for John P. Stockwell

John P. Stockwell, age 70, a respected attorney for over 40 years in Sylvania and Toledo, died after a lengthy illness on Monday, May 1, 2017, at Ebeid Hospice Residence. He was surrounded by his loving family.

John was born August 6, 1946, in Sycamore, IL to the late F.A. "Al" and Kathleen "Kay" Stockwell. A graduate of Bryan High School and The Ohio State University, he began his career as an accountant at Arthur Young while pursuing a law degree at The University of Toledo College of Law. After many years of legal practice in Sylvania and Toledo, John and his long time partner Ron Cooperman formed the firm Stockwell & Cooperman.

He married the love of his life, Christine "Chris/Chrissy" McKarns on Sept. 22, 1966. John and Chris met in the second grade and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his beloved daughters - Lara Wilson (Rich), Andrea Stockwell (Dell Johnson), and grandchildren Betsy Kay Wilson, Zachary Stockwell Wilson, Cooper Stockwell Bradford, and great grandson Mateo Schwartz-Useche.

John helped organize the Toledo Classic, Inc. (originally known as Jamie Farr Toledo Classic) and was a member of the board for many years. He served on the Lourdes College Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee for several years. In 2001, John was honored to join the Board of Trustees of the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball, Inc. and helped move the club to the downtown venue. Later, he was instrumental in the founding of the Toledo Walleye Hockey Club.

John enjoyed and supported the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, The Toledo Ballet, Toledo Museum of Art, Public Television, and the Toledo Zoo.

From a young age, John enjoyed golfing and was a member at Sylvania Country Club and then at Inverness Club for many years. John and Chris loved to travel and were grateful for many wonderful trips with family and friends. He loved good music, movies, a glass of fine wine and a great dinner, often with close friends or family.

John was affectionately known as "Panda" and he cherished his close friends, including the "Clusterfers" at The Toledo Club.

John is also survived by sisters Nancy Dressel (Jim), Julie Brown (George), twin brothers Marc Stockwell (Terry), Mike Stockwell (Nan); cousin, David Rose, who was like a brother to John; Chris's parents Betty and Bill McKarns, her siblings Mic McKarns (Jenni), Jane Fireovid (Jim), Tom McKarns (Lisa), and many cousins nieces and nephews.

John's family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the outstanding caregivers at Ebeid Hospice who provided such tender and compassionate care to John in his last days.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, May 5th, from 3-8 PM at Ansberg -West Funeral Home, 3000 S Sylvania Ave. Toledo, Ohio 43613. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, May 6th, in the Toledo Club Centennial Room.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Promedica Ebeid Hospice Residence, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, or a charity of the donor's choice.
