June Kozy January 17, 1922 January 20, 2013 June Kozy, age 91, mother, grandmother, music lover, and widow of well known Toledo physician John S. Kozy passed away peacefully in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. June was born on January 17, 1922, to Roy and Edith (Dotson) Wingate. June often told the story of how she came to be called June. Her older brother Billy died unexpectedly at the age of 3 and the family was devastated. When June was born in January her parents said she was as welcome as the flowers in June. She was a lover of music and took piano lessons at an early age. When June was 8 years old and her brother Jim was 6, their mother brought them to an audition for a radio program called "Uncle August Kiddie Show" on WSPD Radio in Toledo. This was the same program that brought Theresa Brewer fame. June played the piano and Jim sang. They won the contest for 6 straight weeks, finally getting beat by a child yodeler. June continued her piano training with a dear friend, the famous Bernice McNab, who also trained Dennis Russell Davies. June was a 1940 graduate of DeVilbiss High School and was proud of her status as a "live wire" conferred by her classmates. June 's first job was at Morley 's Dress Shop for $12 a week and she later worked at Willys Overland in the accounting department from 1941 to 1944. June married John Stanley Kozy, M.D. in 1944. John (Jack) was in the Public Health Service and together they moved thirteen times in eleven years with their young family, which included four sons. June had a lively personality and recently relayed a story to a group of friends of how wonderful it was to attend DeVilbiss High School in the era of swing music. June and Jack were on vacation and were watching another couple dance when June commented to Jack, "I think that couple attended DeVilbiss High School." Jack dismissed this responding "We are hundreds of miles away from Toledo!" June said, "I can tell by the way that they dance." To his amazement she was correct. In 1953, June and Jack moved their four boys back to Toledo to their dream home on Ryan Road. This country-like setting allowed the boys to play in the woods and on a neighboring farm. June felt the life she had made for her family was her biggest accomplishment. Jack and June enjoyed golfing and painting together. After Jack died in 1990, June filled her time with golf, travel, painting, volunteering at St. Luke 's Hospital, and her family. She lived for the past five years at Westgate Residential Suites where she was surrounded by many caring friends and her cats Phoebe and Tom. Surviving June are her four sons, Peter Kozy of Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Jeffery (Dr. Mallie) Kozy, Dr. Paul (Marcia) Kozy, and Dr. David (Terri) Kozy and her brother Jim D. Wingate, all of Toledo, Ohio. She leaves behind 12 beloved grandchildren, James Kozy, Jennifer Kozy Mariea, Joanna (David) Gick, Dr. Martha (Bernie) Rissmiller, David (Brittany) Kozy, Lauren Kozy, Dr. Bridget (Nick) Snyder, Dr. Jackie Kozy, Grant Kozy, Julie (Will) Bruckert, Leah (Dr.Kevin) Hartwig, John Kozy, and 13 great-grandchildren whom she enjoyed very much. The family extends special thanks to Diane Mitchell LPN who was a great help to her the last few months. Friends may call at Ansberg -West Funeral Home Friday January 25 from 5:00 to 8:00pm.
