Obituary for Kevin O. Burke

Kevin O’Neill Burke, 51, passed to eternal life peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 19th after a courageous three-year long battle with synovial sarcoma.

Kevin was the beloved husband of Lisa (nee Kolebuck) and most awesome dad ever to Daniel, Erin, Kara and Alena. He was the cherished son of Elizabeth and Tom Burke, and brother of Mike (Tina), Steve (Casey), Mary Beth, Pat (Lisa) and Shannon (Dave Bryan); fond son-in-law of Darlyne and Frank Kolebuck; and brother-in-law of Adrianne (Dan Simmons), Paul (Meagan) and Lance; He was also a favorite uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and a dear and loving cousin, nephew and true friend to many.

Kevin was born in Chicago on February 5, 1965. After graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in Westchester, IL, Kevin attended Northern Illinois and Western Illinois Universities, where he studied Transportation and Logistics. After college, he began an industrious career with Waste Management, Gateway Recycling, and Fondessey Hauling and Disposal. In recent years, Kevin worked for MHL Computer Products. Among his many altruistic endeavors, Kevin was long-standing member of the Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS) Governing Board. As a founding Trustee of OCCS, he also served as Chairman from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, Kevin served as a board member at Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, Inc. for 15 years, where he met his Lisa.

Kevin married the love of his life, Lisa Kolebuck, in 1996, after many years of friendship. Kevin and Lisa were blessed with four beautiful children whom he coached in t-ball, baseball, and basketball. Kevin was his family’s rock and they meant everything to him.

Kevin was a true friend, a man of integrity, patience and wisdom, who had genuine care and concern for others. His easy laugh, and funny faces and voices, made him someone who was truly a “glass half-full” kind of guy, loved by many. His remarkable courage and selflessness shined for all to see. Kevin was greatly loved and respected by his family and innumerable friends, and will be deeply missed by all.
We thank the doctors and staff of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Sarcoma Clinic, especially Dr. Laurence H Baker, DO, and Dr. Rashmi Chugh, M.D. who never discouraged Kevin from living his life to the fullest while fighting this rare form of cancer. A special thanks to Dr. Kara Hertzfeld, M.D., and Toledo Radiation Oncology for their compassionate treatment.
