Obituary for Margaret M. Connor

Margaret M. (Martin) Connor

Margaret Connor, 91, of Toledo, passed away peacefully at her residence at West Park Place on Wednesday, July 27. Margaret was a life-long resident of Toledo and was born at St. Vincent Hospital on Sept. 23, 1923. She was the eldest daughter of the late George and Helen (Dunnigan) Martin. She was preceded in death by her late husband Jerry, her son, Martin, and her sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and John Ragg. She is survived by Sharon (Martin) Connor of Aptos, Ca., Jim (Kathy) Connor of Naperville, Illinois, Kevin (Dawn) Connor, of Marietta, Ga, and her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and John Gercak, of Toledo. Margaret was a grandmother of 7 and great grandmother of 2. She will be missed by all.
Margaret attended St. Agnes Grade School and Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1941. After graduation, she followed in her mother’s footsteps and enrolled at the St. Vincent School of Nursing, graduating in 1944. Margaret worked full time at St. Vincent’s Hospital after graduating, and part time after she and her husband Gerald (Jerry) started a family. She retired from St. Vincent in 1986. She was so proud to be an RN and remained active in the St. Vincent community for the rest of her life.
Margaret married her high school sweetheart, Jerry, in 1947 after Jerry returned from WWII. They spent 57 wonderful years as husband and wife until Jerry’s death in 2004. Jerry had spent 37 years with Owens Illinois and upon his retirement, Margaret and Jerry spent their time traveling to see family and friends, as well as making trips to faraway destinations, including a trip to Ireland to visit relatives in County Kerry. Margaret still talked of the Ireland trip and what a special trip it was for she and Jerry.
Margaret was a warm and charming friend to many and a wonderful mother to her three sons. She enjoyed her time with her sons and their families, traveling to see them all in locations across the country. She loved her sports, baseball in particular, and watched her Detroit Tigers religiously. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania, the Salesians, and the Owens Illinois and St. Vincent retirement communities.
Visitation will take place from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, at Ansberg-West Funeral Home at 3000 Sylvania Ave, Toledo where a scripture service will begin at 6:00pm.
